In January 2025, I gave myself three months. If my tutoring centre wasn't profitable by April, I would close it. I had been running it for 2.5 years. I had 18 students, a rented room, two part-time teachers, and a negative cash flow of ₹28,000–₹32,000 every single month.

The rent was ₹18,000. Teacher fees were ₹22,000. Printing, stationery, miscellaneous: ₹4,000. Revenue from 18 students: ₹36,000. Do the math. Every month I was putting in personal savings just to keep the lights on.

I had tried everything I could think of: flyers in the neighbourhood, ads in the local newspaper (₹3,500 wasted), a discount offer that just attracted price-sensitive parents who left after a month. Nothing was working.

Then in February, completely by accident, I found out the real problem.

The Real Problem Wasn't Students. It Was Visibility.

A parent came in to enrol her daughter. I asked how she found us. "Google Maps," she said. "I searched 'maths tuition near me' and your centre came up."

I was stunned. I hadn't set up Google Maps. Someone had created an auto-generated listing based on our WhatsApp number. It had one photo, no reviews, incomplete hours, and no description. And somehow it was still bringing in students.

That night I searched "maths tuition [my area]" from my own phone. We were listing 4th or 5th. Three competitors above us had full profiles: 40-60 reviews, photos of classrooms, detailed subject lists, proper hours. We had nothing.

The insight that changed everything: My tutoring was good — students who found me stayed and referred others. The problem was that 95% of parents searching for a tutor never found me. It wasn't a quality problem. It was a discoverability problem.

What I Built Over the Next 3 Weekends (All Free)

Weekend 1: Google Business Profile + Website

I spent Saturday claiming and completing my Google Business Profile. Added 14 photos (classroom, whiteboard, students doing work — with parental permission), wrote a proper 200-word description, listed every subject and class level, set exact hours, added our WhatsApp number.

Sunday I used Claude AI to generate a complete HTML website for the centre. GitHub Pages hosting (free). Domain: [centername]-[city].in — ₹450 from Namecheap. The website had our subjects, fees, timings, a "Book a Free Demo Class" button linked to Cal.com, and 4 testimonials from existing parents.

Weekend 2: Online Booking + Automated Follow-Ups

I set up Cal.com for the "Free Demo Class" booking. When a parent books, they automatically get a confirmation email with the centre address, what to bring, and a reminder 24 hours before. Previously I was doing all of this manually via WhatsApp — and sometimes forgetting.

I also set up a Brevo email sequence: Book demo → Confirmation email → 24hr reminder → Day-after follow-up asking if they'd like to enrol. Three automated emails. Zero effort after setup.

Weekend 3: Reviews + Local SEO

I asked every existing parent personally to leave a Google review. Sent a WhatsApp message with a direct link to the review page. Of 18 families, 11 left reviews in 2 weeks — most gave 5 stars with detailed comments. We went from 0 reviews to 11.

I also added schema markup to the website (LocalBusiness JSON-LD) and submitted the site to Google Search Console. Within 10 days we were appearing for "maths tutor [area]", "science tuition [area]", "CBSE coaching [area]".

What Most Small Business Owners Get Wrong

We think the problem is our product or service. Most of the time, the problem is that people can't find us.

A salon with one Instagram post every 3 months and no Google profile is invisible to anyone who didn't already know about it. A clinic with no website is losing patients to the clinic 2 streets away that has 40 Google reviews. A tutor who takes bookings only by phone call is losing students to the one who lets parents book a free demo class online at 11pm.

The 3 problems that kill small businesses digitally:

  1. Invisible on Google — no profile, or an incomplete one with no reviews
  2. No website — no place for interested people to learn more and take action
  3. Friction in booking — if getting started requires a phone call, you're losing 60% of interested people who won't make the call

All three of these are fixable. For free. Over a weekend.

I Almost Didn't Do It

The honest part: I almost didn't do any of this. I spent the first two weeks of February in a kind of paralysis — researching, reading articles, watching YouTube videos about digital marketing. Information without action.

What broke the paralysis was deciding that the research phase was over and the doing phase had begun. I gave myself one rule: build something, no matter how imperfect, every weekend. Imperfect and live beats perfect and in your head.

The website I built in one Sunday wasn't beautiful. But it was there. The Google profile I set up wasn't perfect. But it had photos and reviews. The booking system worked — not flawlessly, but it worked.

Three months later, I hired a third teacher. We're now running at 100% capacity on our current room size. My problem is no longer "how do I get more students?" It's "where do I expand?"

Your business might have the same problem mine did.
