For two years, I kept signing up for things. Fresha at ₹6,500/month. A booking software at ₹3,200/month. SMS reminders at ₹1,800/month. Urban Company where they took 25-30% of every booking. Staff scheduling software at ₹2,400/month.
I never sat down and added it up. Until my accountant did it for me.

The Part That Surprised Me Most: Google Is Better Than Fresha
I thought Fresha and Urban Company were how new customers found me. I was wrong. When I properly set up my Google Business Profile — added 20+ photos of the salon, every service listed with prices, complete opening hours, responded to every review — I started getting 15-20 calls/week directly from Google Maps.
These were customers searching "hair salon near me" or "keratin treatment [my area]". They were not platform customers who'd compare me to 50 other salons on commission. They called me directly. They booked via my link. They paid me directly via Razorpay.
The platform lie: Booking platforms make you dependent on them for discovery. But in most Indian cities, Google Maps is how most people actually find local services — not an app. If your Google Business Profile is excellent, you don't need to pay a platform for discovery.
How I Moved Existing Platform Customers to Direct
I didn't just quit and hope. I spent 3 months actively converting my platform customer base to direct:
- Loyalty card at checkout: "Book direct next time and get ₹100 off." Every customer who paid via Urban Company got this card.
- WhatsApp group for regulars: My top 30 clients are in a WhatsApp group. They get first access to new services, seasonal offers, and holiday slots. They feel VIP. They never use Urban Company anymore.
- Google review request: After every appointment, I sent a WhatsApp message with a direct review link. Went from 3 reviews to 47 in 4 months. This transformed our Google visibility.
6 Months Later
Revenue is up 22% because more customers are finding us organically via Google, and we're keeping more of every transaction. Software and platform costs: ₹504/year. Monthly profit has more than doubled.
The most important change isn't the money. It's the relationship. I know my customers now. I have their WhatsApp numbers. When we added a new service, I sent them a message — 8 booked the same day. When Urban Company was my middleman, I knew nothing about the people sitting in my chair.
